What You Need To Know – A few of our commonly asked questions

Installation

Is sub-framing required for installation?

No, sub-framing is not needed. The curb length is designed so that the upslope and downslope attach directly to the purlins. The long sides of the curb overlap with the existing panel and are secured using stitch fasteners, similar to how each roof panel is secured on the rest of the roof.

Do you supply all the materials needed to complete the installation?

Yes, we provide all necessary mastic, sealants, and fasteners with each skylight. No additional accessories are required except the necessary tools.

How do I replace an existing LTP unit with this system?

Remove the existing LTP skylight and clean all sealants from the perimeter. The RS36 is designed to have a similar footprint with enough upslope flange to slide under the panel on the upslope. Once this is complete, the curb remains flashed to the roof, making it easy to remove and replace the glazing as needed.

Can these skylights be installed on new buildings as well?

Yes, this system is perfect for both new construction and the retrofit or replacement of existing LTP skylights.

Design

What keeps the skylight watertight?

The upslope flange slides under the roof panel, while the side and downslope flanges are installed over the roof panel, creating a shingled effect. The upslope also features an integrated cricket to divert water to the adjacent sides of the curb. The side flanges overlap the panel ribs, reducing the condition where fasteners are in the flat/water plane. Finally, the curb is fully welded and tested before shipment.

Where is the fall screen located?

The fall screen is factory-installed beneath the dome to prevent long-term degradation associated with exposure to moisture.

What sort of light transmittance does this system offer?

We use a special plastic engineered for daylighting products, yielding a 72% light transmittance. Achieving 100% light transmittance is only possible with a clear opening with no material between the sun and the interior, so 72% is considered excellent.

Why would I choose a double dome unit?

A double dome design improves thermal properties in two ways: it helps reduce heat buildup from sun exposure by creating a thermal barrier between the domes, and it helps retain warmth inside the building during cooler months for the same reason.

What is the size of the skylight opening?

The dome size on a standard unit is approximately 26″ x 111″ and 9″ tall.

How much does this skylight weigh?

The aluminum model weighs 55-60 lbs depending on single or dual glazing, while the steel unit weighs 100-105 lbs.

What kind of plastic is used?

We use prismatic acrylic plastic with a white tint for 100% haze and light diffusion.

Support

What warranty is offered?

We offer a 20-year warranty on the aluminum curb base and a 5-year warranty on the glazing. The steel curb has a 1-year warranty on the curb and a 5-year warranty on the glazing.

Does R&S install these skylights?

R&S is a material supplier only and does not offer installation services. However, we have an extensive customer network and can often recommend an installer in your area.

What if I have questions about the installation?

We provide an installation guide on our website and are always available to discuss specifics to help prepare your team for a seamless installation.

What is involved in replacing a dome if it is broken?

It’s simple. Remove the cap flashing and glazing from the existing curb, clean as much sealant as possible, then use the supplied dome, sealant, and fasteners to reinstall the cap flashing. It’s quick and straightforward.
